Why Order Matters

Percentages don’t stack the way people expect. Applying a discount, then tax, then a tip on the new total gives a different final number than applying all three to the original price separately. This calculator applies each step to the running total in order: discount first, then tax on the discounted price, then tip on that after-tax total, matching how most receipts actually work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the order of discount, tax, and tip change the total?

Yes. Each percentage is applied to the running total from the previous step, so the sequence affects the final number, unlike simply adding all the percentages together.

Can I skip a field if it doesn’t apply?

Yes, leave any field blank and that step is skipped, moving straight to the next one.

Why isn’t stacking three 10% changes the same as one 30% change?

Because each percentage is calculated on a different, larger or smaller running total rather than the original number, three stacked 10% increases compound to just over 33%, not exactly 30%.
