Group Bill Splitter With Uneven Shares: Split by What Each Person Ordered

Enter what each person actually ordered, plus a tip percentage, to see everyone’s fair share, tip included proportionally.

Splitting a bill evenly isn’t fair when one person ordered a salad and another ordered steak. This tool splits the tip proportionally based on what each person actually spent, so everyone pays their fair share.

How the Proportional Split Works

Each person’s tip share is calculated based on the percentage of the total bill their own order represents. Someone who ordered 40% of the total bill pays 40% of the tip, rather than an equal split regardless of what they ordered.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter one person per line as Name: Amount, using their order subtotal before tip.
  2. Tip Percentage: the total tip percentage for the whole table.
  3. Click Split the Bill to see each person’s total, item cost plus their proportional share of the tip.

Example: Alex ($22.50), Sam ($15.00), and Jordan ($30.25) with an 18% tip each pay their own subtotal plus their share of the $12.20 total tip, proportional to what they ordered.

The Formula and a Full Worked Example

Each person’s total = their subtotal × (1 + tip %). That is the same as giving each person a share of the tip equal to their share of the bill.

Example: Alex ordered 22.50, Sam 15.00, and Jordan 30.25, so the subtotal is 67.75 and an 18% tip is about 12.20. Alex pays 22.50 × 1.18 = 26.55, Sam pays 15.00 × 1.18 = 17.70, and Jordan pays 30.25 × 1.18 = 35.70. Together that is 79.95, the bill plus the tip, so nothing is left over.

Handling Shared Items and Tax

Split shared dishes evenly first and add that amount to each person’s own order. For tax, either enter after-tax amounts for each person or add tax in proportion to their subtotal. Rounding to the cent can leave a penny difference, so have one person cover it.

Did You Know?

  • Some groups add a shared item (like an appetizer or a bottle of wine) by splitting its cost evenly first, then adding each person’s individual order on top before running the proportional tip split.
  • Many restaurants automatically add an 18-20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more, so it’s worth checking the receipt before adding an extra tip on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t want to use names?

You can enter just the amount on each line without a colon, and the tool will label each one Person 1, Person 2, and so on.

Does this include tax?

Enter pre-tax amounts if you want the tip calculated on the food cost alone, or after-tax amounts if the tip should be based on the taxed total; use whichever matches how your group wants to tip.

Can I use this for more than a few people?

Yes, add as many lines as needed; the calculator processes any number of people.

Is a proportional tip really fairer than an even split?

Usually, yes. Someone who ordered a small meal pays a smaller tip, in line with what they spent. Some groups still prefer an even tip as a simple courtesy, so agree on the method before you order.

What if the tip is already on the bill?

Set the tip percentage to 0 and enter each person’s share of the full bill, or enter the bill’s own percentage if you want the tip broken out per person.
